Swing Copters review: Old wine in a new bottle

swing copters

It wasn’t very long ago when Flappy Bird became an overnight success and developer Nguyen was earning more money from advertising alone, than he knew what to do with. The game got pulled from the Store for reasons that are still not very clear to us, only never to return. However, Flappy Bird fans found something to rejoice when the same developer announced a new game called Swing Copters. In fact, the game resembles so much to the original that fans of the first shouldn’t have to miss Flappy Bird at all.

Gameplay:

The reason why Flappy Bird was so popular was its insane difficulty. If you ever thought flying was easy, you just had to control that flying bird once and we’re certain you wouldn’t have felt the same again. Swing Copters picks up the same formula and puts it in a new package. Instead of having to control the bird’s vertical movement, Swing Copters asks players to take control of a bird that looks like it’s borrowed a helicap from Doraemon and steer it left or right, while it ascends upwards. If Flappy Bird asked you to steer your character through gaps between pipes, Swing Copters makes you avoid horizontal beams and pass through the gap between them. Oh, and while you’re at it, you’re also supposed to avoid mighty hammers that are tied at the ends of the narrow space between the beams and swinging horizontally.

The only problem is that your character’s helicap is as fragile as it comes. Even a slight contact with anything on the screen (including the screen edges) breaks it apart and your game ends. Tapping on the screen changes the horizontal direction of the bird 180 degrees. However, the laws of physics apply and even after tapping on the screen, it still goes a little in the original direction due to its momentum. That makes avoiding all the obstacles even more difficult and the game more challenging.

After 15 minutes of practice, we managed a high score of 15 and we only think it should improve as we play a little more. In fact, a recent update for the game has made it somewhat more easy than before, so no, it’s not impossible to make a decent score.

Graphics and audio:

Thankfully, the developer decided not to get into any controversy this time and left the Mario style visuals for good. Don’t get us wrong, Swing Copters still looks from the the 8 bit era, just that it doesn’t use every element from Mario’s play yard. Sadly, the game doesn’t make use of the extra space on tablets and just stretches everything to the point that it looks bad.

The sounds are very minimalistic. The only sounds are when you crash or change your direction and there’s no background score at all.

Verdict:

While the difficulty made Flappy Bird challenging, it makes Swing Copters repetitive and boring. It is so much similar to Flappy Bird that if you’ve had your share of the first one, you’re not likely to find this one very engaging. Flappy Bird clicked with the audience because it was something new, while Swing Copters came after the world had played Flappy Bird. Unfortunately, the game solely relies on its difficulty and there’s nothing else it has to offer. People who’ve never played Nguyen’s first game might find it praise worthy, but others, well, no we’re not flabbergasted like we were the first time. It seems like Nguyen wanted to make his next game ‘less addictive‘ and he’s managed to just do that.

Swing Copters is available for free on the Play Store and Apple App Store, but comes with a huge ad banner on the top. We’ve heard that there’s an option to remove the ad for 99 cents, but we couldn’t find it anywhere on our Android version. You can try it out of course, just don’t expect anything extraordinary.

Google could release a new messaging service for emerging markets

google hangouts

The market is flooded with messaging service apps like WhatsApp, Viber, Line and whatnot. However, Google feels there’s room for just one more similar service. According to a recent report, Google is planning to release a new messaging app for emerging markets. The app will likely be launched in India and other emerging markets as soon as sometime in 2015.

The app is said to be currently in its early stages of development could do away with the need to have a Google account in order to login. Instead, it could use the user’s mobile number similar to what other messengers use. That could also be the prime difference between the new app and Hangouts, which already provides a similar service. The app will also support features like voice to text messaging and multiple regional language support. At this moment, it’s not known if the app will be exclusive to Android or if it would be released on other platforms as well.

It seems like the new app will be a part of Google’s new found interest in emerging markets that started with Android One. Google offered to acquire WhatsApp for $10 billion last year, which was rejected by WhatsApp. How successful this new app turns out to be, remains to be seen.

Updated Dropbox on Android allows you to transfer files to external memory

0

dropbox

Dropbox has announced a new update for its app on Android that brings one of the biggest user requested feature on board — the ability to save files to external memory. That means you can now transfer files saved in the cloud to your phone’s microSD card. There’s no restriction on the type of files that can be transferred either.

To copy a file to your device’s external memory, simply tap the “Quick Action” button to the right of the file you want to export, select “More”, then “Export”, and tap “Save to Device” to pick your external SD card.

Besides the above mentioned change, the app also gets some bug fixes and search performance enhancements. Of course, since Apple devices don’t support external memory, there’s no point of bringing the same feature over to iOS.

With competition between Dropbox, Microsoft’s OneDrive and Google’s cloud storage option heating up, these companies are doing all that they can to rope customers into buying into their service.

Changelog for version  2.4.5.10:

– Ability to export files to SD card
– Search performance enhancements
– Miscellaneous bug fixes and improvements

Flipboard arrives on Windows Phone 14 months after its official announcement

Flipboard to arrive on Windows Phone anytime now

Flipboard for Windows Phone. The app was announced for the platform back in July last year. Its been 14 months since that announcement and it’s only today that we finally have the official app for Flipboard available in the Windows Phone Store. The app was spotted in the Windows Phone Store a few days back, but it wasn’t available for users to download back then.

Description:

Flipboard is your personal magazine. An award-winning app used by millions every day, it is the best way to catch up on things happening around the world or dive deep into specific topics, from gadgets to grilling. To begin, pick a few categories you want in your magazine. Then tap any tile to read specific things you’ve added or use Cover Stories, a quick way to browse highlights from all your topics.

The app looks like it’s been built from scratch for Windows Phone, unlike the web wrapper that Flipboard has been trying to shamelessly use as a substitute on the platform in the past. However, some users are reporting that the app isn’t working on their device/region just yet, so some of you folks might have to wait out a little longer. No worries though, since the app is finally here and that should be more than a reason to celebrate for now.

Instapaper goes free while adding a new premium prescription

While app developers explore all new ways to make money, giving users the option to have the app for free along with adding a small fee for some premium services has been gaining popularity among productivity apps. Premium users will find that besides these features, they can also perform a full text search on your saved content, have unlimited highlights (free users only get 5 highlights a month), “send to Kindle” option, get text to speech playlists for mobile and also have an ad free experience.

The subscription costs $2.99 a month or $29.99 an year and can be purchased from within the app.For comparison’s sake, competitor Pocket that offers similar functionality costs $4.99 a month or $49.99 for a full year.

LEGO® Creator Islands lands on the Play Store

0

lego creator island

LEGO is smart to adapt itself according to the market. From being a toy manufacturer only a few years back to having multiple games for different platforms, LEGO knows how the game is played. Now, the company has launched a new game in the Play Store called LEGO® Creator Islands. If you’re thinking you’ve heard this name before, that’s because it is already available as a browser game.

Features
• Build a large range of Vehicles, Creatures and Houses on the Islands building lots.
• Use the map to navigate the LEGO Creator Islands after you have unlocked them.
• Help the Inhabitants and earn Yellow bricks to build new models.
• Unlock the LEGO Creator Power Digger and LEGO Creator Rabbit to make way for new building lots.
• Make the islands your own with a variety of mini builds, which can be used anywhere on the islands.
• Use zoom and rotate to see all the details of the models.
• Log into LEGO ID to play across web and app.

LEGO® Creator Islands has been built on the Unity engine and has a SimCity style management gameplay. Creating buildings or vehicles for Minifigs earns you more building material which can be used to expand your empire. You discover new islands and places along the way.

The game has been designed for kids clearly, although that doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy it. However, the game is incompatible with most smartphones an works mostly on tablets. It’s free to download, so if you have some little ones in your house, you can definitely give it a try.

Assassin’s Creed: Identity coming out to Android and iOS next year

0

assassins creed

Assassin’s Creed on mobile isn’t something exactly new. However, it’s good to see whenever a new AAA title is announced for smartphones. After Assassin’s Creed: Pirates, the next game in the series that will be coming out on Android and iOS has been named Assassin’s Creed: Identity. The game features the stunning graphics and audio quality that we’ve seen the series deliver on PC and consoles, however, it will be scaled down to fit the limits of smartphones and tablets.

The game takes place in medieval Italy and will feature open cities (albeit smaller than the ones seen on consoles) and console style assassination missions (again shorter). You will also have a chance to step into the boots of other assassins, such as the Shadowblade and the Berserker. Identity will be powered with the Unity engine and will feature high-definition textures, shaders and models that draw inspiration from the console versions.

Currently, the game has been soft launched in Australia and New Zealand and should see a wider launch sometime later next year. There’s no word on a Windows Phone version just yet, but we might see it hopefully sometime after the launch on the other two platforms.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Online lands on the iPad

0

pokemon tcg online

C’mon. We know you love Pokémon, even after all these years. And while Nintendo’s pocket monsters had been enjoying their exclusive stay in the Nintendo ecosphere (in the handheld segment), they’re ready to forage into new territories. Pokémon TCG Online has just landed on the iPad, making it the first platform outside Nintendo to offer players the chance to play with Pikachu and his friends. Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is now available in the iTunes store as a free download.

Features:

PLAY, TRADE, AND CHALLENGE OTHER PLAYERS AROUND THE WORLD
Have fun learning and mastering the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online! Practice against the computer or go head to head with your friends or other players from around the world. Unlock cards and decks as you play to build up your collection and make truly unique decks. Your decks and card collection are stored as a part of your Pokémon Trainer Club account, allowing you to switch between iPad and desktop with ease.

EASY TO START: Choose from Grass, Fire, or Water decks, step right into a game, and learn as you go in an easy play experience.

EXPAND YOUR COLLECTION: Earn cards, open booster packs, trade with other players, and build the perfect deck around your favorite cards. Your collection grows with you!

CUSTOMIZE YOUR EXPERIENCE: Build your own decks, customize the look of your cards, deck boxes, and avatar, and join your friends online.

HONE YOUR SKILLS: Play against the computer until you are ready to challenge other players.

CHALLENGE THE WORLD: When you feel your deck design is ready, challenge other players or join a tournament to show your skill and knowledge.

The game requires a constant internet connection to play and is only supported on Retina displays, meaning the first and second gen iPads won’t cut it. Wan’t more, you can import your progress that you’ve made over the last three years on Mac OS X or Windows and continue from where you left.

It seems like Nintendo no longer sees having exclusive content to its own platform as the best way to drive business. Well thought, we must say.
