While Google+ might not be as popular a social network as its counterparts, it’s still used by millions. The app has been updated by Google on both Android and iOS. Facebook Messenger adds group chat in the latest update for Windows Phone

facebook messenger

Facebook Messenger has been available on Windows Phone for quite some time now, however, it’s generally lagged behind its Android and iOS counterparts since beginning. Thanks to a recent update though, there’s one less feature that’s not available on Windows Phone. Here’s the changelog for version 5.0:

  • Group support: Now you can create groups for the people you message the most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place.
  • Instant photo sharing: Take a photo and send it in just one tap. Plus, it’s easier to send photos from your gallery.
  • Continued improvements: We’re working to make the app more reliable and use less data

The update finally adds the ability to start group conversations on your Windows Phone device, a feature that was only recently added to Android and iOS versions. The update also makes it easier to send photos by opening the camera directly from the app. Sending photos from gallery has also been made easier.

The app also gets some bug fixes and general maintenance. You can grab Facebook Messenger for Windows Phone here.

Google Hangouts adds custom message sounds and ringtones

hangouts

Google Hangouts has been pushed to version 2.1.223 on Android and the update brings some rather important features. The update adds the option to choose custom ringtones and message sounds for specific people and Hangouts. this can allow users to identify who exactly has sent a message without unlocking the phone. The option has been placed in the People & Options menu for each Hangouts conversation. The update makes it at par with competitor services like Viber and WhatsApp, that already offer such feature.

Along with this, the update also brings a user’s Contact Card image as their default picture in Hangouts. Earlier, the image was pulled from the Google+ account of that person. One probable reason for this could be connected to the previous update that integrated SMS and hangout messages from the same person in the same thread.

You can pick Google Hangouts on Android here. There’s no word on a similar update for the iOS version yet, but we reckon it should be here soon.

Temple Run 1 and 2 cross 1 billion downloads collectively

Temple Run made endless runners on smartphones what they are today and Temple Run 2  only managed to take the sub genre even more popular. Today, developer Imangi studios announced that the two games have collectively crosses 1 billion downloads collectively on all platforms. These include Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows and BlackBerry. The count doesn’t include Disney spinoffs Brave and Oz.

Further, the studio revealed that 6 percent of all its audience are women and 36 percent of all its users hail from China, followed by the US at 21 percent. This isn’t surprising, since these two countries also happen to be the biggest smartphone markets.

With such success, we can’t help but wonder if Imangi would bring a third iteration in the series sometime in the future, or if it feels that the franchise shouldn’t be milked further. We’ve even heard talks about a movie adaptation, but then that remains to be seen.

– More levels and content coming in updates

What’s more, the developers have promised new levels and content in future updates. It costs $3.99 on the Windows Phone Store and weighs 87MB. However, the good news is that users with just 512MB RAM will be able to run the game just fine. You can pick BADLAND for Windows Phone here. There’s a free trial available too, in case you wish to try it out before spending any money.

Instagram adds new editing tools and adjustable filters

instagram

With so many photo editing apps out there that can add Instagram like filters, it’s hard to get the authentic Instagram experience anymore. As such, Instagram is bending the rules for its own advantage. The company has announced new set of tools to adjust the filters. These include: strength, brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, highlights, shadows, vignette and sharpen.

These filters will give a greater control to users in bringing out the best out of their photos. The filter settings can be accessed using a new wrench icon that appears upon selecting the filter. Tapping it brings up a host of options. Not only that, but you can also choose the amount of filter you wish to apply to a photo by double tapping on the filter icon.

The update is rolloing out for iOS and Android apps, with no word on the Windows Phone version. Grab the app at the respective stores at the links below.

Apple AppStore now home to 1.2 million apps that have been downloaded 75 billion times

At WWDC, Apple took some time to brag about some big numbers. One of these was about the apps in the app store, which has apparently crossed the 1.2 million mark. These apps have been downloaded some 75 billion times till now. No doubt that would make competitors seem like amateurs.

Apple also revealed that the interest in the App Store is very much alive and kicking, with some 300 million visitors every week. Of course the growing user base is one reason for that exponential growth.

Even with the stiff competition from Android and Play Store, Apple has managed to stay ahead in the game with most titles arriving first on iOS. Of course, some of them require back room deals, but in the end, it’s iOS users who are undoubtedly getting the best app experience among all users.

WhatsApp returns to the Windows Phone Store adding new features

whatsapp

If your recently got a new Windows Phone device or accidentally deleted WhatsApp from your old phone, you might have noticed that the app wasn’t available in Windows Phone Store since the last two or so weeks. The reason for the removal was compatibility issues with the OS. After Microsoft made public that it was working closely with WhatsApp to resolve the issue, we were hoping for the app to return sooner than later.

Fortunately, it’s back and better, it’s been updated with new features. Here’s the full changelog:

  • Chat backgrounds
  • Broadcast lists
  • Privacy settings (settings > account > privacy)
  • Media auto-download settings (settings > chat settings > media auto-download)
  • Custom notification tones (Windows Phone 8 Update 3 required)
  • Various enhancements and bug fixes

Yes, that’s right, you won’t have to see black backgrounds while chatting with your friends anymore. Also, you can now set custom ringtones for the messenger, as well as change your privacy settings. Granted, these features were long overdue and should have been here earlier, but it’s better late than never, right?

You can download WhatsApp from the Windows Phone Store here.
