Pako review: A car chasing action game that’s fun, addictive and hard to keep down

We first heard about Pako on WPCentral and we thought to give the game a try. It’s been hard to put down since. Pako is a car chasing game for Windows Phone that proves you don’t necessarily need to be a big developer to push quality games. What’s more, it’s only available on Windows Phone. Now that doesn’t happen very often, but Windows Phone offers developers the unique opportunity to showcase their quality app that can otherwise be lost in a sea of umpteen apps on other platforms. So does the game hold any promise? Let’s find out

Gameplay

pako 2

Supposedly, you’re a bad driver wrecking havoc in the locality and the cops have in turn decide to  turn you in. Your job is to evade them for as long as possible. The counter keeps ticking as long as you don’t run into them or any other objects in the vicinity. Even a little contact explodes your car like it’s some Michael Bay movie. You control the car from a god’s eye view and can steer the car either left or right by tapping on the screen. There’s no gas or brake and your vehicle is ever accelerating. There are two levels and two cars, with one of each added after the first update. The first level is set in the parking lot of a shopping mall, while the second level is in a suburban neighborhood, where you’re on the run in an orange muscle car. Once you crash, the game restarts automatically.

You will often find yourself trying to beat your best score. It reminds us of the Flappy Bird days, although the difficulty here isn’t half as bad. The current high score on the global charts is close to 6 minutes, but we haven’t gone beyond 90 seconds until now. The trick to survive long is to drift as much as possible and we’ve been doing just that.

Graphics and audio

With those kind of crashes, I’ll need to save and have an insurance too

The game has been created using the Unity engine and even though the visuals are plain and boxy, the bright colors are appeasing to the eyes. The environment is as good as it gets and even destructible to an extent (the electric poles fall when a cop car crashed into them). The music in the background isn’t bad either although there’s the occasional sound of your car crashing into something. Overall, we have nothing to complain in this department.

Final words

pako 1

Pako is a great game that will soon be coming to Android and iOS. In the mean time, Windows Phone users should grab it for free. What’s more, the developers have promised additional levels in the future with new gameplay elements like zombies that can be run over to gain some extra seconds. The only thing that disappointed us was the ad banner on the top edge of the screen that cannot be removed. We wish there was a paid version that removed the ad, but then, it isn’t really that big an issue. It’s one of those few games that have been released first on Windows Phone, since exclusives here have a better light of coming into the spot light and that’s understandable.

You should definitely try it out. Grab it for your Windows Phone at the store link below.

Google is gearing up for the launch of plenty many Android Wear powered smartwatches that are slated to hit the markets worldwide in the coming weeks. It’s pretty much useless right now, but once Android Wear watches start hitting the shelves next week, it will be quite useful for the early adopters. The app will allow users to control voice action preferences, adjust notification settings, and configure devices.

Google has also added a new section in the Play Store specifically for Android Wear applications. The apps in this section are regular apps, just that they have been tailored for smartwatches. There are only a handful of apps in this section for now, but we expect the list to only grow with time.

Microsoft pushing to bring Office on Android tablets

office adroid

After bringing Office on iPad, Microsoft is looking to bring its cash cow to Android. According to a report on The Verge, Microsoft is hard at work building an Office suite tailored for Android. The app can be expected to hit the platform sometime later this year. Office for Android will be second such endeavor from the company, creating an Office app designed specifically for tablets. It is noteworthy that the company hasn’t still released a Windows 8 touch optimized version of the same and is only expect to roll it out sometime in 2015.

Currently, the company is working on a private beta test for the Office on Android and is accepting participants through a special pre-release program. While Office has been available on Android for an year now, it’s been designed around smartphones and isn’t all that feature rich. Keeping the best version to Windows really hasn’t helped the sales of Windows based tablets, which are still dismal compared to Android ones. However, bringing Office to Android could help the company rake in hefty revenues, given the large Android user base.

QuickOffice will be removed from the Play Store once all its features have been implemented in Google Drive

quickoffice

Microsoft Office competitor QuickOffice is set to make an exit from the Play Store. Don’t worry though, since you’ll still be able to access all its features, just not in the same way as before. Having acquired QuickOffice last year, Google will now be integrating all its features on to Google Drive/Docs.

QuickOffice has been around way before Android as an alternative to Microsoft’s Office. However, according to the official block post, the app will be unpublished from both Play Store and iOS App Store in the coming weeks. It will continue to work for users who have already downloaded it, but won’t be updated in the future. Of course, Android users will still be able to side load the last version of the APK.

While, we’ll no longer see a very popular app on the store, it’s absence won’t really hurt since all of its features will be moved over to Google Drive.
