It’s not even been a week since Angry Birds Epic made a grand launch on Android, iOS and Windows Phone and Rovio has already announced the next game in the series. Called Angry Birds Transformers, the game is a tie up with Hasbro’s shape shifting robots series. Previously, Rovio also tied up with Start Wars to deliver Angry Birds: Star Wars 1 and 2.

Angry Birds; Transformers will feature Autobirds and Deceptihogs as birds disguised as robots in disguise. You can also expect to see related merchandise from Hasbro for the same. Rovio hasn’t spilled the beans on what the gameplay would be like. The game could feature the regular slingshot mechanism, or could have some new gameplay elements like the recently launched Epic. We’re also expecting the game to launch on iOS, Windows Phone and Android.

Rovio has also launched a special website for the game and you can keep track of all the latest news about it on the website.

Upload allows users to upload videos to YouTube on Windows Phone

upload to youtube

Thanks to the tiff between Google and Microsoft, Windows Phone users have been unable to enjoy a YouTube experience as good as their counterparts on Android and iOS. However, the huge collection of third party apps have tried their best to fill the void. While there are plenty of apps to allows users to play YouTube videos on Windows Phone, there wasn’t any until now that allowed them to upload videos to the website. Luckily for them, the newly launched and aptly named app Upload to YouTube just allows users to do that.

Using Upload to YouTube, users can upload videos from their Camera Roll to YouTube by selecting the share option and then clicking on upload. Or, they can also upload videos using the app instead.

The only downside to the app is that it cannot upload videos while running in the background, which can be a problem for users trying to upload large videos. Also, the UI isn’t all that great, but we hope developers will change that in future updates.

Google Maps becomes the second app to cross 1 billion downloads

google maps

After Gmail, Google Maps has become the second app on Android to cross 1 billion downloads. Only last month, Gmail became the first app to cross the mark on Android.

One billion represents the unique accounts that have been used to download the app, so multiple downloads from a single account are factored for. In fact, back in 2011, Google Maps was the first app to cross 50 million download mark on Android. The app has only been improved and made more feature rich with each update and it’s undoubtedly one of the best mapping solutions available on any platform today.

If we factor in the downloads on iOS, the number would be much higher. With this, we have two (and only) Google apps in the billion downloads club. We’re expecting YouTube to be next in line.

Angry Birds Epic is the latest installment in the popular series and is now seeing an open launch on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Previously, the game was soft launched on iOS in some regions.

The battles will be turn based where the bird forces from your side will take on the evil forced of green pigs.

Pinterest lands on Windows Phone

pinterest

Slowly and steadily, major high profile apps are making their entry on the Windows Phone Store. Now, Pinterest has joined the club with the official app being available for the platform. The app is still in beta, but that shouldn’t be an issue for users who have been waiting for the app to hit the store. The beta app allows all the major functions that can be done through the Pinterest website.

Sadly, that is pretty is pretty much it, with the app being more or less a shortcut to the mobile version of the website. It lacks the deep integration found in iOS and Android versions. Here’s what the app allows you to do:

  • Plan projects: home remodels, car restorations, garden redesigns and other DIYs
  • Dream up your next trip: outdoor adventures, road trips with friends, family outings and exotic vacations
  • Collect your favorite things: illustrations, tattoo ideas, hilarious quotes, tech gadgetry and inspiring art and architecture
  • Save great ideas: articles to read, movies to watch, gifts to buy, fashion and beauty how-tos, food and recipes to cook, fitness tips and lifehacks
  • Get organized for a party: wedding decor, birthday themes, costume ideas and game day menus

Given that the project is still in beta and will be looking for community feedback to improve, we expect future versions to be much better and enhanced than the first version. For now, let’s just be content with the fact that the app is available for the third biggest mobile platform.

You can pick Pinterest for free from the Windows Phone Store here.

nokia store

While the Nokia X comes sans the Google Play Store, Nokia’s own Nokia Store does a decent jb of making most apps available on the phone running forked version of Android. Today, Nokia rolled out an update for the store, making it easier to search for apps and install them.

The new store comes with a refreshed menu bar that makes navigation through the store easier. Once searched, you can easily install a  particular by simply tapping quick install. There’s also a new quick update button that enables to update directly from the app list. A new widget on the homescreen shows three apps at a time from the Nokia Collection and gets updated periodically to keep users aware of new apps available in the Store.

The update is available for Nokia X, X+ and XL. Users simly need to visit the store and they’ll be greeted with a prompt asking to update the store. It weighs just 1.5MB and shouldn’t take long to update.

Candy Crush Saga sequel Candy Crush Soda Saga gets soft launched on Android

candy crush soda saga

Thanks to Candy Crush Saga, developer King is now a $7 billion company. Naturally, the company would want the cash to keep flowing and as such, it has launched the sequel to the extremely popular game calling it Candy Crush Soda Saga. The game has been soft launched on Android and is currently available in Canada, Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Candy Crush Soda Saga keeps the same winning formula as the original, requiring players to match candies of like colors across 75 levels. The game has been tweaked just enough to keep the gameplay fresh though. Unlike the original, candies tend to float instead of sinking down like they did in the original. This marks the biggest gameplay change, although there are other minor variations throughout the game too.

A full launch on both Android and iOS is expected to happen sometime in 2014. You can download the game if you fall in the regions of soft launch here.

Facebook’s Snapchat competitor Slingshot makes a brief appearance before getting pulled

slingshot

The idea behind Snapchat has gained quite some popularity. We’ve seen Apple borrow the self destruct nature of Snapchat messages on iMessage. Facebook too announced a Snapchat competitor some time back called Slingshot after talks to acquire Snapchat in a deal worth $3 billion failed. It seems like Facebook jumped the ship on that app since it got published on the Apple App Store before it was intended to. Naturally, it was pulled down as soon as the Facebook engineers realized their mistake.

Similar to Snapchat, Slingshot allows users to send messages, photos and videos that self destruct once seen by the recipient. Just like Snapchat, you can add captions to these photos too. However, unlike Snapchat, users will need to “Sling” a “Shot” before being able to unlock a message. That means you’ll have to send something back to the other user before being able to read his message. It’s probably being done to encourage users to use the app more proactively.

Facebook has since confirmed the “accidental” launch of the app and has disclosed that the app is being developed by Creative Labs, the team behind Paper, Facebook’s new reading app. Expect Slingshot to hit the App Store later this month. If all goes well, we might see it on other platforms too.

Microsoft announces refreshed Skype for iOS with brand new features

skype

Microsoft today revealed a new version of Skype for the iPhone that has been given a complete overhaul over the existing one. The new version brings a refreshed UI that is in line with iOS’s design along with new features. Microsoft claims it’s trying to make the experience consistent across iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Here’s what version 5.0 of the app offers:

  • Faster: You’ll notice the effort we’ve put into this overhaul as soon as you launch Skype 5.0 for iPhone. The new version is over 5 times faster than the old version.
  • Smoother: As you swipe from conversations through to your favorites and then back to your contacts lists, you’ll notice how smooth scrolling and transitioning from screen to screen is – with delightful little pops and animations punctuating them. All without degrading the performance and battery improvements we worked so hard to achieve.
  • More Integrated: Now, iPhone users can start group chats from the hub. And when you send messages or photos, it doesn’t matter if the recipient is offline. Everyone will see your message as soon as they are available again.
  • Smarter: We know our users are using Skype on multiple devices, and we want to make sure your Skype notifications keep pace with your conversations, no matter where they happen. Now, as you read your messages on your PC, tablet, Xbox and so on, those conversations will be marked as read (or unread if new messages come in) on your iPhone too.

The app will be made available on the store sometime this week.
