Microsoft launches Live Lock Screen app as a beta on Windows Phone

live lock screen

Trying to improve the overall Windows Phone experience, Microsoft has launched the Live Lock Screen app on the Windows Phone Store. The app was first teased at Build 2014 and it’s taken a long time since then for Microsoft to actually release the app.

So what does this new Live Lock Screen app have to offer? It lets you choose from 6 screen layouts, with each layout having its own unique way of displaying time, notifications and unlock animation. You can use Bing images in the background as normal. You can also set the frequency of refreshing the image to every hour, every four hours, every twelve hours, daily or never.

“Want to truly personalize your lock screen? Live lock screen lets you choose from 6 new lock screen layouts to add a distinctive touch to your Windows Phone. Each layout has a revamped design for the time, date, and notifications, as well as a unique unlock animation. You can also cycle through multiple background images throughout the day to keep your lock screen fresh—or just get the latest incredible image from Bing every morning.”

Live Lock Screen Beta is available for both devices with 1GB RAM and 512MB RAM. Remember it’s still in beta, so it could use some polishing. You can grab it on the Windows Phone Store here.

It seems like Rovio isn’t planning to stop milking its cash cow anytime soon and the company has already released the trailer for the next game in the Angry Birds series called Angry Birds Transformers. As the name suggets the game has a tie up with Hasbro’s Transformer series of shape shifting alien robots.

The trailer shows the red bird as Optimus Prime fighting Deceptihogs changing from the truck figure to a humanoid robot. The trailer doesn’t show the actual gameplay, but rather a cutscene sort of sequence. Also, the trailer shows you’ll be able to add characters in the game by placing collectible toys from Hasbro in front of your phone or tablet’s camera.

There’s no word yet on when the game will be released. Check out the trailer below.

New Explore feature comes to Google Maps on Android and iOS

google maps exlore 2

The recent update to Google Maps added a new feature called Explore Nearby. Google has now made it official on both Android and iOS. Explore helps you to discover your surrounding area better through Google Maps. A simple tap of a button at the right corner gives a quick loot at what’s nearby. Another aspect of the feature is that it’s dynamic and shows areas of interest depending upon things like weather (a hot coffee on a rainy day) or the time of the day.

You can also define “nearby” according to your own preferences, say a 10 minute walk or a 20 minute drive. These also change depending on external elements like the weather, traffic or time of the day. So for instance, Explore could guide you to the best cafe in the area for breakfast and a completely different place for lunch. You can also bookmark the place, get detailed reviews about it and even get transit routes. The feature is contextual and learns from the user behavior.

With Explore, Google aims to take on the likes of Yelp and Foursquare in the near future. Nonetheless, we can’t deny that its a nifty feature. Grab Google Maps for Android and iOS at the links below.

Foursquare gets a new design, logo and purpose

0

foursquare

Back in May, Foursquare announced that it will be splitting the app into two, Foursquare and Swarm.  While Swarm will allow you to check-in and find friends nearby, the Foursquare app was set for a different path. Today is the day when that path is clear ahead of it and the new Foursquare 8.0 app will finally be arriving in the next few weeks. The app gets a new design, new logo and a new purpose with the update.

Until now, Foursquare was all about checking in different restaurants to inform your friends about it. The new app gets a “Most Popular” section that informs users about the most trending and popular new restaurants. Although, you’ll have to use Swarm to check into these places from tomorrow. Your past check-ins will automatically be moved to the new app.

Swarm and the new Foursquare app should work seamlessly together. The company calls it the first step towards ‘personalized local search’ future and with its 50 million users, we don’t doubt Foursquare’s capabilities.

Rovio’s latest installment in the Angry Birds series, Angry Birds Epic has picked updates on all three platforms. The updates don’t add any new levels or gameplay elements, but provided general bug fixes and such. Here’s the full changelog that’s consistent across the three platforms:

– RESTED BONUSES are now rewarded correctly – that means proper points (yay!)
– INVENTORIES don’t disappear or become negative – your stuff is now safe
– RAGE CHILI is now under control – but still full of intense rage (Grrr!)
– PEST CONTROL – loads of other fiddly stuff fixed too
That’s pretty much it. You can pick Angry Birds Epic on the three platforms at the store links below.

Uber app makes a comeback on Windows Phone, still needs some work

uber windows phone

Good news Windows Phone users. Getting  a cab through your smartphone has just been made simpler due to the relaunch of Uber app on the Windows Phone Store. The app had first been launched on the store back in March last year and had been pulled subsequently a month later due to all the negative press it received from the users. The second attempt at the app is somewhat better, but leaves a lot to be desired when you compare it to its Android and iOS counterparts. Here’s what the app has to offer:

  • Request a ride using the app and get picked up within minutes. On-demand service means no reservations required and no waiting in taxi lines.
  • Compare rates for different vehicles. Add a credit card to your secure account so you never need cash on hand.
  • Easily set your pickup location on the map, even if you don’t know the exact address. Get connected to your personal driver and check the progress of your Uber at any time.
  • Sit back, relax, and go anywhere you want. We’ll email you a receipt when you arrive at your destination.

Unfortunately, some features like fare quotes and shareable links are still missing from the app. The good news is that Uber plans to add these features in the future updates. Here’s what the company promises to bring to the app eventually.

  • Fare quotes within the app
  • Shareable links with trip map and ETA
  • The ability to split your fare with friends for a more affordable ride

Sprawling over a 150 cities in 41 countries, Uber is a useful way to find a pickup to your desired destination. You can check the app on the Windows Phone Store below.

Skype 5.0 for Android will use your phone’s address book to add contacts

skype

While services like WhatsApp and Viber use contacts in your address book to add friends, until now Skype had been on a different path altogether. However, with Skype 5.0 on Android, Skype will be following the same route. In a blog post, Microsoft announced that the new version of Skype on Android will use your phone’s address book to add contacts on the service. The implications are simple. It will make finding your friends on Skype easier than before.

Once the update rolls out in the coming months, you’ll be prompted to verify your number, after which the app will automatically load up contacts in your phone book that have Skype installed. Although, you can choose to add these contacts on your own. The best part is that users having a Microsoft account on Skype will see these contacts synced across Outlook and Windows 8.

The only question remains is when will the update be rolled out, as “coming months” isn’t exactly very specific. Also, Microsoft hasn’t said anything about other versions (including the one on its own Windows Phone), we’re expecting the feature will roll out to these platforms sooner or later.
