Microsoft removes some 1,500 misleading titles from Windows Store and Windows Phone Store

spam apps

The absence of some popular titles on Windows Phone and Windows Store has often been seen as an opportunity by some notorious developers who’ve published scam apps in these stores with names and logo that people mistake for being authentic. As such, these apps get downloaded by unaware customers, while these developers make money for naught. Fortunately, Microsoft isn’t just sitting idle out there and is making sure such activities do not go on on the Windows and Windows Phone Store. The company has changed its store policies to prohibit developers from publishing such apps in the future. These changes include:

  • Naming – to clearly and accurately reflect the functionality of the app.
  • Categories – to ensure apps are categorized according to the app function and purpose.
  • Icons – must be differentiated to avoid being mistaken with others.

Apart from these welcome changes, Microsoft has also removed some 1,500 fishy apps from both the stores and is refunding customers who had bought them. That’s not all, since the company is working towards speeding up the review process and identifying more problem apps. We hope Microsoft doesn’t take too long since the Windows Phone and Windows Stores do need some immediate cleaning up.

Bioshock lands on iOS for $14.99

bioshock ios

Back when Bioshock was announced for iOS, we were excited to know about the pricing and availability of the game. The wait is over and Bioshock is available on the Apple App Store for $14.99.

The game is a full port of the original that was released on last gen consoles and PC back in 2007. Although, to make the game run on the “less powerful” hardware, the developers had to scale down the graphic a bit (admittedly, it doesn’t look very pretty). Also, this had to be done to comply with Apple’s policy of 2GB being the maximum file size that can be downloaded through the App Store. Developed by 2K China, the game works with both on screen controls and a Bluetooth controller.

You can play the classic on iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPad Air, iPad 4, and iPad mini 2. There’s no word on whether an Android port will be coming later or not.

Dropbox plans to take on competitors with aggressive new pricing plans

0

dropbox

It’s a cut throat competition out there and Dropbox doesn’t wan’t to stay behind. The company has changed the pricing and storage of its cloud storage plans to match more closely with what Google has to offer on Google Drive and Microsoft’s OneDrive.

Until now, Dropbox offered 100 GB of space for $9.99 per month, with an upper limit of 500 GB for $500. Those plans have been scrapped and now the company is offering 1TB of storage for $9.99 a month, similar to what Google Drive offers for the same amount of money. Annual subscription will cost you $99 for the same storage, a saving of 17 percent. However, that’s not all and to beat the competitors Dropbox plans to offer the following features soon:

  • Passwords for shared links create an additional layer of security so only people with the password can access your link.
  • Expirations for shared links safeguard your sensitive files by letting you set how long your links stay up.
  • View-only permissions for shared folders let you pick whether recipients can edit or just view files within your shared folder.

Those features are unique to Dropbox and could give it a significant advantage over the competitors. New Remote wipe also lets you delete your Dropbox files from a lost or stolen device while keeping them safely backed up in Dropbox.

Google News & Weather app on Android after a long time

0

google news and weather android

Google News & Weather app on Android had not been updated for so long that we assumed Google had forgotten about the app altogether. Luckily that isn’t so and the Mountain View giant has pushed out an update for the app recently. The update is supposedly a big one and brings some important changes. Here’s the changelog:

  • Sign-in with Google account for Google News personalization
  • Tablet support
  • Expand stories for snippets and related articles, e.g. Opinion, In-depth
  • Navigate sections via the menu or simple swipes
  • Weather and local news for multiple places
  • New resizable homescreen widget
  • Change editions for news in different countries

The app finally looks like it should on tablets thanks to new optimized UI. It also adds another heavily requested feature — personalization. Users can sign in with their Google accounts to get the news that they prefer to view. You can also add multiple locations to get localized news and weather. The new app has been separated from the key Android core, meaning we should see frequent updates in the future.

Google News & Weather is available for all Android devices running Android 4.0 and above. Grab it from the Play Store here.

Instagram launches new Hyperlapse app on iOS

hyperlapse ios

Instagram isn’t just a one app company with multiple less known apps under its banner. Today, it’s added another one to its list called Hyperlapse. The app offers  high-quality time lapse videos even while in motion.

Traditionally, time lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.”

The video recording app doesn’t need any sort of registration or account and can be opened straight to the camera. You can choose any speed between 1x-12x and save the videos to your camera roll.

For now, Hyperlapse is only available on iOS, while an Android and Windows Phone version haven’t been even mentioned. Might be that if the idea clicks, the company might consider launching Hyperlapse on other platforms.

Spotify brings free music streaming on Windows Phone

Spotify brings free music streaming on Windows Phone

While Spotify has been offering a ad loaded free version of the app on Android and iOS for a while now, Windows Phone users have had to shell out cash to avail the same service till now. However, that changes now, since Spotify has enabled its free music streaming feature to Windows Phone users. Previously, only premium users could stream music on the Windows Phone version of the app.

The update also enables free users to stream content from their playlists. Then, there are improvements to search results and it’s easier to search artists now.

Today’s update brings the app closer to its Android and iOS counterparts. We wish we could say the same about some other apps as well.

Changelog:

  • Listen for free. Play any artist, album, or playlist in shuffle mode.
  • Fictitious: This app walks like a dinosaur.

Grab Spotify for Windows Phone 8 and above from the Windows Phone Store here.

Google launches Slides on iOS, updates Docs and Sheets to open Office files

google slides ios

Google has launched its Slides app on the iOS App Store making it sit along with the already available Docs and Sheets apps. As the name suggests, Slides allows users to create or edit presentations on their iPhone or iPad. The app is synced across devices and any changes you make on one device gets reflected on your Android device and PC. The app also supports offline editing. The work done offline will get saved on the cloud once you’re connected to the internet. The appoffers the following features:

  • Create new presentations or edit any that were created on the web or on another device
  • Share presentations and work together with others in the same presentation at the same time
  • Open, edit, and save Microsoft PowerPoint files
  • Get stuff done anytime — even without an internet connection
  • Add and rearrange slides, format text and shapes, and more
  • Present right from your device
  • Never worry about losing your work — everything is automatically saved as you type

Besides, Google has also updated the Docs and Sheets apps on the App Store. Both these apps now allow to open Microsoft Office files, something that could make Office on iPad reluctant for many.

WhatsApp now has 600 million active users

0

whatsapp

Back when Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion earlier this year, the messenger had close to 400 million active users. However, that number has swelled by 50 percent in a span of mere six months. The company today announced via its Twitter channel that the total active userbase of WhatsApp has crossed over 600 million users.

It’s worth mentioning that WhatsApp has always used active users vs. registered users to brag about its user base. It’s significant because these 600 million people actually use the app instead of just having it installed on their smartphones (unlike many other messaging apps). Although the number isn’t particularly large in the US, WhatsApp is extremely popular in Asia and Europe, mainly because the app is available on a wide variety of platforms including those found on lower end phones as well.

It would be interesting to see how WhatsApp plans to start making money of these 600 million customers in the future.
