Instagram launches Snapchat rival Bolt in the most secret way possible

instagram bolt

So what if we’ve heard from the initial reports that Facebook’s Snapchat rival Slingshot turned out to be a dud? Never mind since the company decided to make another similar app, launching it under Instagram’s banner. Called Bolt, the Snapchat competitor from Instagram has hit the Play Store and Apple App Store. It’s a soft launch and the app is currently available only in Singapore, South Africa and New Zealand. As the name suggests, the app has been designed to send photos and videos in the quickest way possible.

So how does Bolt expect to stand in the crowded market that has many in-house competitors besides the successful ones? User need to sign up using their phone number and the app doesn’t require an Instagram or Facebook account. The app then searches for other contacts in your address book who are using the app and allows you to add them to your favorites list (much like WhatsApp works). Once you open the app the camera opens up, but rather than the shutter button, there are your friends photos as icons on the screen. Clicking on of their faces sends them the photo. To send a video, just tap and hold instead.

You can only send a photo or a video to only one person at a time. The app also allows you to adjust a few settings like flash and add text to your images. Another useful feature that the app offers is “shake to unsend”. If you shake your phone within the first few seconds of sending the photo, it will recall the  sent photo.

How much of a success Bolt turns out to be will only be known in the future. But it seems like Facebook is throwing everything to get back at Snapchat, which declined the company’s $3 billion offer.

Facebook Messenger to be made a compulsory download on mobile platforms

facebook messenger

In order to give a further push to its messaging service, Facebook is making use of Messenger mandatory on smartphones and tablets for users to send and receive message. The process had already started a few weeks back in parts of Europe and seeing it as a success, the company has decided to roll it out worldwide.

In the next few days, we’re continuing to notify more people that if they want to send and receive Facebook messages, they’ll need to download the Messenger app. As we’ve said, our goal is to focus development efforts on making Messenger the best mobile messaging experience possible and avoid the confusion of having separate Facebook mobile messaging experiences. Messenger is used by more than 200 million people every month, and we’ll keep working to make it an even more engaging way to connect with people.”

With this, users will be forced to download Facebook Messenger on Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Facebook says the move will help it manage the two separate apps better, but of course, we understand that’s not the only reason. Recent reports claim that the company is aggressively looking to monetize its Messenger app and with so many people using Facebook, people will have no choice but to download the standalone Messenger app.

How the move goes down with the public remains to be seen. Not all of Facebook’s past endeavors have been a success.

The extremely popular and critically acclaimed The Walking Dead game series on iOS and Android will soon have the next game in the series called The Walking Dead: Season Three. The news was broken by Telltale Games, the creator of the earlier games in the series at Comic Con.

The news isn’t exactly a surprise, given the critical and commercial success enjoyed by the earlier games. For those who aren’t exactly aware, the games are based on Robert Kirkman‘s The Walking Dead comic book series (yes, the popular TV show is also based on the same comics). Episode five of season two is also yet to be released. The game series has been popular due to the unpredictable plot, the emotional tone and the characters. Walking Dead series has won several awards in the past and as such, hopes for the third season are sky high.

Telltale didn’t tell exactly when the game will be launched, but a 2015 launch is being expected. Also, season three is expected to be fragmented into five episodes like the last season and will most probably land first on iOS followed by Android.

Google Voice now supports calling people with Hangouts

google hangouts

Google has added other nifty feature to Google Voice, adding voice calling to people through Google Voice. The feature is available even to those who don’t have a Google+ profile. It also works when you’re using Hangouts outside of Gmail.

The feature can be used in Google Voice by selecting Hangouts from the “Phone to call with” drop down menu. With that Google has added another clean feature to Hangouts, which it is trying to pit not only against instant messaging services like WhatsApp, but also video and voice caling services like Skype and Viber. We might see Voice getting phased out completely in the future, with Hangouts as your one stop shop for all your communication needs.
