Windows Phone apps may get expensive in Europe starting next year

0

tax regimes europe

While the Holiday season is often associated with deals and discounts, it seems like its end could bring a little discomfort to Windows Phone users in Europe. Starting January next year Microsoft is changing the  European VAT rates that are charged on apps moving from a flat 15% for every country to country specific rates. Now, none of the individual countries have rates less than 15% and most of them even have it higher than 20%.

While the ultimate decision to change the prices of their apps will rest with the developers, with their margins hit, they might have no choice but to raise the prices of their apps (or the prices of in-app purchases). Microsoft has gently hinted developers stating, “you may want to start thinking about how this change could impact your EU pricing decisions.

The move comes as a part of some European governments’ decision to avoid tax evasion by big enterprises who often set bases in countries with low tax regimes while reaping profits from countries with a higher tax.

HTC has pushed an update for its Gallery app in the Play Store. Gallery is another of HTC’s core app that was moved to the Play Store to provide timely updates to consumers, as well as make new features accessible to devices which don’t get the latest Android versions (and also avoid carrier related hassles). The update adds Cloud Gallery to the app. Cloud Gallery allows you to view your pictures and videos saved on the cloud. The app can connect to Facebook, Dropbox, Flickr and Google Drive accounts.

The update also adds Face Fusion photo editor. The feature was first made available on One M8 and other models through the Eye Experience update. What is does is blend two portraits and come up with a brand new face. The update also allows to tag images on your phone using keywords. You will also be able to search  and see tags from Facebook and Flickr.

The app also gets some UI changes, which makes it a bit easier to sort images and video by day, month or year.

You can grab the update for your HTC device from the link below.

Screenshots of unreleased version of WhatsApp on Android show VoIP

whatsapp voice calling

Rumors about WhatsApp introducing voice calling on its app have been making rounds since a lot of time now. This has been accompanied by a number of leaked proofs and other hints time and again. It was believed that Facebook’s acquisition of the company might bring that feature sooner than later, however, mum’s been the word till now. But a set of new screenshots from an unreleased version of WhatsApp on Android show that the team is indeed working on bringing VoIP to the service.

The screenshots reveal how the UI will look once the feature is rolled out. It seems like VoIP will have a call history similar to your phone’s regular one, showing missed, received and dialed calls. There will e a separate page just for calls and rumor has it that you’ll be even able to record them.

It is expected that WhatsApp will rollout the feature sometime on Q1 2015. While it would be a welcome change for half billion WhatsApp users, competitors like BBM and Viber already offer similar service. What we suspect is WhatsApp could take on Skype by allowing users to even dial landline and mobile numbers in the future. But of course, that’s just us guessing.

71 percent apps on Windows Phone are installed on low memory devices: Microsoft

windows phone download statistics

While we already new that most of the Windows Phone sales are driven by low end models (not like Microsoft has given us too many high end phones to begin with), it turns out, most of the app installations are also done on these device. Microsoft has revealed that 71 percent of the apps for Windows Phone are installed on devices with 512MB RAM or less.

Of these, Nokia Lumia 520 is still the star, commanding over a quarter of all downloads. It’s followed by the recently announced Lumia 530. On the high end of the spectrum, Lumia 920 and Lumia 925 get the highest share among devices with 1GB RAM or more.

windows phone trends

Games are the most popular category on Windows Phone, followed by Tools and Productivity. US by far is the biggest market for Windows Phone Store, followed by China and India.

As for revenue, advertising brings over half the revenue for Windows Phone developers, followed by in-app purchases. Also, the $9.99 in-app purchase price seems to bring in the highest revenue.

The report shows why developers need to add support for devices with 512MB RAM at launch. Of late it’s been not just games, but other app categories as well, that have given low memory devices a skip.

Twitter adds analytics to its iOS app

twitter analytics

Most of us call a Tweet success if it’s been retweeted and favorited a healthy number of times. However, Twitter is now allowing users to take a deeper dive into all sorts of data around their Twitter account. The company has added a new analytics section to its iOS app.

Once you’ve updated the app to the latest version, all you have to do is click on one of your tweets to get to the detail page and tap “View Tweet Activity.” The page will show all sorts of data like the number of impressions and engagement, tweet metrics break out by organic and promoted activity, as well as additional information such as the percentage of people who have favorited your tweet, clicks on a link in your Tweet or the number of folks visiting your profile through that Tweet.

You’ll be able to view detailed information of as many as 3,200 old Tweets that date back to October 2013 (beyond which the data isn’t available). There’s no world on when the feature will hit other platforms, but we reckon it won’t be long. Grab the latest update for Twitter from the link below.

Duet Display turns iPad into a secondary display for Mac

0

duet display

While iPad is certainly a useful device, you will now be able to do even more with it  when you’re sitting on your Mac. Thanks to a new app developed by an ex-Apple employee, your iPad can turn into a secondary display for your Mac. Called Duet Display, the app transforms your iPad into a secondary display when connected to the Mac using the standard USB charging cable. Oh, and the secondary display is also touch enabled, adding to the productivity.

I think most people don’t use two monitors, and this makes it simpler because you don’t have to buy anything if have an iPad and Mac.Otherwise, you have this wasted display that is worth like $700, and it’s just sitting there when you’re using your Mac. Duet enables you to get some more productivity out of it,” said Rahul Dewan, the app developer speaking to Business Insider.

While there are other similar apps, those rely on WiFi to connect your Mac to iPad, which brings a fair amount of lag. Duet Display however, offers zero lag thanks to the wired connection. You can get the app or your Mac here. You’ll also have to download the companion app from the App Store for your iPad. It costs $9.99 in the App Store.
