Assassin’s Creed Pirates to hit Windows Phone and Windows on August 14th

assassin's creed pirates

Ubisoft has Tweeted that Assassin’s Creed Pirates will be hitting Windows Phone and Windows on August 14th. Back in December last year, Ubisoft had promised a Windows Phone port. The game has been available on Android and iOS since December last year and while Windows Phone users will finally be getting to play the game, the porting hasn’t been the quickest.

Assassin’s Creed Pirates follows follows Captain Alonzo Batilla, as he commands a ship and crew, while crossing paths with the Assassins and Templars. Gameplay is focused on real-time battles between ships. The game is available on Android and iOS for $4.99 and $5.99 respectively and can be expected to hit the same price tag on Windows and Windows Phone. Hopefully, the title will be a universal app, allowing to be enjoyed on both platforms, while paying only once.

YouTube app on Android now supports 1440p playback

youtube 1440p playback

Starting only recently, the YouTube app on Android started allowing users to select the resolution of the playback on their Android phone or tablet. The maximum resolution of the playback depends on the device, although the behavior has been somewhat erratic.

Until now, the app only supported playback up to 1080p even the actual screen resolution was higher. However, as discovered by Droid-life, the app is now supporting 1440p playback on devices with screens that can support that kind of resolution (LG G3 for instance). Of course, the video will have to support that resolution as well.

To change the video resolution, simply tap while the video is playing to bring up the options menu and therein select the resolution that you want. Users with displays that have higher than 1440p resolution should see the option available.

Windows Phone Store now boasts 300,000 apps

windows phone store

Windows Phone Store seems to be crossing one milestone after the other. After hitting 255,000 apps in June and 270,000 apps more recently, the number has now swelled to over 300,000. That’s close to a thousand apps added everyday since June.

There haven’t been many high profile releases in the last month except for a couple of titles including Uber. Yes most of these apps would be junk apps, but it’s good to see the Store not loosing momentum. There are still many apps that need to see the Windows Phone Store yet, while many have been lying dormant for months and need updates (the likes of Pinterest beta).

Let’s hope the situation only improves further before the end of the year.

Google Search, Google+ and Play Music apps updated on Android

google apps update

Google has updated its Search, Google+ and Play Music apps on Android adding new features to both.

Starting with Google Search, the update takes it to version 3.6. The update adds deep linking for apps through search. However, these features will need developers to implement in their apps first. Also, the update hints at future hands free mode for the app in the future. There’s a new interface within the app that looks cleaner than the current version.

As for the Play Music app, the update takes it to version v.5.6.1616. The update adds a new 1×1 widget that gives access to the “I’m feeling lucky” radio feature. Then there are other minor changes like a new storage meter in download section, Search now finding shared public playlists and more.

Lastly Google+ has also been updated. The app adds no new features as such, but there’s general improvements and bug fixes.

Catch the apps on the Play Store below.

Skype updated on Windows Phone with a host of new features

skype for windows phone

Microsoft has given Skype some love on Windows Phone and has pushed a rather significant update on the platform. Here’s what version 2.21 for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 has to offer according to the official blog post:

  • Send photos – You can now send photos to one or more contacts and you can receive photos from friends and family who use an iPhone (V5.0 or above) or Windows Phone 8 or Windows Phone 8.1 device. When you share photos to your contacts who use other platforms, they may receive a URL link to open the pictures. This is the first step: we’re working hard to build this new photo sharing experience across all of our platforms, so look out for more improvements over the coming months
  • See more conversation history – In chat view, you can now scroll up to load even more of your conversation history.
  • Text mark-up – Use text mark-up such as asterisks to make your text bold and underscores to make your text italic.
  • Add favorites from chat view – In chat view, tap the options button and add the contact you’re chatting with to your favourites.
  • Performance improvements – We’re focused on building a great app that puts conversations first by working hard on performance improvements.

That’s rather huge set of improvements. We’ve seen the Windows Phone version of Skype usually trail behind the iOS and Android counterparts, but it’s good to see some work been done on the app.

You can grab Skype for Windows Phone on the Windows Phone Store here.

Pinterest adds direct messaging, just not the way everybody else does it

0

pinterest

Pinterest has added a new interesting feature to its app. Until now, users could only send “Pins” to their friends with no way to reply back to those pins. However, that changes now with the web version along with Android and iOS apps of the service allowing users to send messages to each other. These aren’t the usual messages that you’d send on WhatsApp or Messenger though.

Similar to chat heads on Messenger, these messages pop up as bubbles with your friends’ profile pics. To start a conversation with someone, users will have to send them a Pin. The other user can then comment on that Pin or respond with a Pin of his own. Pinterest claims its all about shared interest or taste and the new features keeps those interests within the conversation. Users can group chat with as many as 10 friends at a time.

Conversations seems like an extension to the Send a Pin feature that was introduced last year and seems to be doing well with 2 million PIns being sent each day.

Google pulls game based on Gaza-Israel conflict from the Play Store

bomb gaza

Seeing the conflict between Israel and Gaza taking its toll on many lives, Google found it apt to remove a game from the Play Store called Bomb Gaza. The game put the players in the seat of IFA pilots who then are supposed to drop bombs on Gaza while avoiding killing civilians. The game has been met with huge public uproar and backlash. Bomb Gaza has seen harsh criticism in the user review section and has been termed as offending by many users. It had been downloaded close to 1,000 times before Google pulled the plug after several user requests for the same. The game had a low maturity setting, meaning the developers thought it safe to be downloaded and played by minors.

The move only seems befitting, given that close to 1,800 Palestinians, many of which were children have lost their lives in the on going conflict between the two countries. Google prohibits hate speech and abusive material in its Play Store terms of service and it will probably cite the same clause for removing the game from the store. Although, there are still a few apps in the Play Store based on the current conflict, including Iron Dome and Gaza Assault: Code Red.
